The airport is the gateway to the idyllic archipelago of the Maldives, and the new terminal is planned to support an increase in passenger numbers from the current 2.6m to over 6m. It has many fascinating characteristics, such as the relatively unique situation of having next to no onward ground transportation, with the majority of arriving passengers continuing their journey by boat or sea plane, to reach their island resort destination.
